MARSHALL MOTOR GROUP SELECTS CASTROL LUBRICANTS


  • One of the UK’s largest dealer groups signs three-year deal with Castrol Professional
  • Agreement, effective from 1 September, sees Castrol Professional supplying lubricants to 26 different brands across 62 dealerships
Marshall Motor Group has selected Castrol Professional to supply its lubricants in a new three-year deal.

The group – one of the largest and fastest growing dealer groups in the UK, having doubled in size over the last two years - switched to Castrol Professional after 20 years with a previous supplier.  The contract is effective from 1st September and sees Castrol Professional supplying lubricants to 26 different brands across Marshall’s 62 dealerships.

Castrol is the most recognised lubricants brand in the UK, and the brand to which motorists are most loyal.  Castrol Professional supports its lubricants products – which are uniquely co-engineered with many of the world’s leading car manufacturers and which are exclusive to the franchised dealer sector – with a range of advanced internally-developed aftersales business development, consultancy and training solutions.  These programmes include the award-winning Red Carpet training programme for service advisers and the real-time Electronic Visual Healthcheck (EVHC) system.

BANGERS4BEN AUCTION 2011 RAISES AN OUTSTANDING £15K

Aston Barclays Auction House in Chelmsford recently hosted the auction of Bangers4BEN cars which raised over £15,000 for the automotive industry charity.

This year’s event saw 31 teams make a trip to the home of Ferrari in Italy in four days. Teams were tasked with buying a car for £500 or under which were then sold at this auction
Auction day saw a crowd of eager dealers battling to purchase a piece of Bangers4BEN history ending in a total sale price of £15,324.96 with buyers’ fees of £1,624.96 added, and this amount will rise once sponsorship money is included. Marshall Motor Group cars sell well at the Bangers4Ben Charity Auction in Chelmsford

The Bangers4BEN auction took place at Aston Barclay’s Chelmsford site - and the cars made more than £15k!
The sale in Hall 1 of Chelmsford saw a throng of dealers battle it out to get a slice of the Bangers4BEN memorabilia, and the sale marks the end of 2011’s charity banger event.
In total the special sale raised £15,324.96 with buyers’ fees of £1,624.96 added, and will rise once sponsorship money is included.
Impressively, only two cars didn’t go under the hammer - BCA’s Alfa Romeo 147 which sold for £1k at another auction, and Crystal Communications’ Alfa 145 which will be sold separately. Team Klarius - who sportingly helped us out with our alternator failure - put a Renault Scenic into the auction instead of their Renault Safrane.

Leading companies line up for BGAD11 event at Cambridge Airport


The seventh annual Business and General Aviation Day, BGAD11, hosted by Cambridge Airport and held in conjunction with European Business Air News, is shaping up to be the most successful yet.
With three weeks to go BGAD11 has attracted close to 50 exhibitors, including OEMs Embraer Aircraft and Cessna, which is sponsoring the media centre. Embraer is bringing its new full fly-by-wire Legacy 500 simulator, currently on its world tour.
To date 11 business aircraft and three helicopters have booked to display in the static park. Embraer and FlairJet will each exhibit a Phenom 300 light jet and Cessna will show a Citation CJ3. Cambridge Airport-based Marshall Executive Aviation will show its Bombardier Challenger 300, Cessna Citation Bravo and the Cessna Citation XLS; Norwich-based SaxonAir Charter will display the Hawker 400XP and Action Aviation, new tenant company at Cambridge Airport, will debut the transatlantic-capable high speed SJ30 light jet. Smaller business aircraft showing for the first time at BGAD include Diamond Executive Aviation’s DA42 Twin Star and the DA42 MPP multi-mission surveillance aircraft plus Cambridge Aeroclub’s Extra200 training/sports aerobatic aircraft. Helicopters on display include a Eurocopter EC155, EC135 and EC120.

Among the new exhibitors this year are charter company Centreline Air Charter and Gloucestershire Airport, together with an increased number of European exhibitors including Lancelot, the Spanish based Flight Services provider, and Avinode the b2b online market place. Another unique attraction and new to BGAD this year will be charter broker PrivateFly’s ‘booth’ - a novel vintage Routemaster bus.
London-based in-flight catering specialist Alison Price On Air will give delegates a demonstration of its unique fine dining system. Its revolutionary in-flight catering system is tailored specifically for the aviation industry and will appeal to passengers, FBOs and anybody involved in influencing in-flight catering service selection.
Additional attractions this year will feature a display of top quality cars, courtesy of Marshall Motor Group, and First Class Cars, specialists in chauffeur-driven car services for business aviation clients.
BGAD11’s exhibition and static display will be complemented by two ‘free to attend’ seminars. ‘The Practicalities of the Olympics’ an inter-active Question Time style panel discussion will run at 11 am until 12 noon. Moderated by Aviation International News’ Charles Alcock, the panel line up has been finalised with the addition of the UK CAA’s Jonathan Nicholson. Avinode’s Magnus Henriksson will explore the events and trends that have shaped the European charter market this year with its ‘An Industry in Motion: exploring the European Charter market - circa 2011 at 2pm.

Marshall Motor Group won the Award "First for Motoring" sponsored by Cubiqdesign at the recent Velvet Magazine Awards.

We beat stiff competition to come 1st in our category, the other nominees were; Robinsons Mercedes Benz, Elms BMW and Mini, Donalds Mazda and Kia, Audi and Volkswagen Bury St Edmunds, John Banks Honda and Suzuki and The Vindis Group.

The awards were voted for by over 15,000 Velvet Magazine readers over a period of 2 months.



The awards evening was attended by over 250 local businesses and was held in the beautiful setting of Woodditton Barns.

Have a great break not a great break down 
As families are hitting the road for a summer get-away the Institute of the Motor Industry is keen for everyone to have a safe break. With this in mind here are our top motoring tips for a successful summer break.
  1. First item on our checklist is tyre pressures. Always check tyre condition (including tread depths to make sure that they are legal and will last the long journey) and pressures before a long trip and adjust for loads being carried - this helps to keep fuel economy at its best.
     
  2. It's important to check your coolant levels, this needs to be done when the engine is cold.
     
  3. Its also important to check your engine oil levels, if the red oil light is showing on your dash board then DON'T run the engine which means don't drive the car.
     
  4. When booking your car in for a service think about how it has been running so you can give the staff an accurate assessment.  Make sure no extra work is carried out without your permission and ensure you know the costs involved. Finally, get an itemised bill and an explanation regarding the work carried out. This would also be a good time to make sure you have a current MOT.
     
  5. Being able to see is useful especially when driving so ensure your screen wash is topped up, your wipers are clearing the screen properly and your lights are all working. Being in an unfamiliar place with limited vision can lead to an unnecessary accident.
     
  6. In hot weather the one thing you will need is Air Conditioning and it is worth having it serviced and checked for operation.
     
  7. Chances are if you are heading off with the family you are going to be towing a caravan. If that is the case then you need to check over the caravan's tyres and brakes, especially if it has been standing for a long period.
     
  8. Its always good to be prepared so make sure safety items are stored in the vehicle - your warning triangle, spare bulb kit and first aid items.
     
  9. Always make sure the spare tyre or inflation device is in good condition and usable should you need it.  Make sure you know where the locking wheel is stored as it won't be much use if you are stranded at the side of the road and it's stored at home. If you are unfamiliar with changing a wheel with a laden vehicle (full up with holiday luggage) then perhaps see this is covered by your breakdown insurance.
     
  10. If your car is in need of a service then ideally you should go to a garage that employs members of the IMI or ATA technicians. This means they have signed an ethical code of conduct and have passed rigorous checks and have proved their technical competence to work on your vehicle.

Marshall Motor Group gains SAF Approval

Cambridge’s Marshall Motor Group is the latest high-profile motor dealer to achieve SAF Approved status under the Specialist Automotive Finance (SAF) initiative. The accolade comes after months of hard work by the dealer’s staff and means that Marshall Motor Group customers can be sure that they are getting expert information on motor finance products like Personal Contract Purchase and Hire Purchase.

SAF was introduced by the Finance & Leasing Association (FLA) – the trade body for the motor finance industry – in 2007 to improve knowledge in showrooms and increase customer confidence in motor finance. SAF Approved demonstrates to customers that a business has committed to educate its staff on how to sell motor finance. Around 300 Marshall staff from some 67 dealerships have passed the online SAF competence test to achieve the increasingly popular kite-mark.


Marshall Motor Group’s inclusion in SAF coincides with growing consumer interest in the ‘Dealer Directory’ (www.FinancingYourCar.org.uk) that enables car buyers to search for their nearest SAF Approved showroom. With 21 of the top 30 dealers in the UK now recognised as SAF Approved, more and more businesses are getting involved, as savvy customers demand accurate information about motor finance.


Paul Harrison, Head of Motor Finance at the FLA, said:
SAF is a kite-mark to give consumers confidence about the motor finance information they receive. If customers are given clear and reliable information on why a particular product is right for them then this will inspire confidence and hopefully keep customers coming back in the future.
I am pleased that Marshall Motor Group is SAF Approved. This now means that 70% of the top 30 groups have voluntarily raised standards on motor finance for their customers. We continue to speak to all groups about SAF.”

MMG Triumphs at the Motor Trader Awards

At the glittering Motor Trader Awards ceremony in London this evening, Marshall Motor Group has picked up no fewer than 3 of the most prestigious awards and was shortlisted in 2 further categories.
The first award of the night went to Grantham Volvo which was named as FRANCHISED DEALERSHIP OF THE YEAR.  This award was collected by General Manager Bob Bean on behalf of his team and this caps off a remarkable year for Grantham Volvo – they have already been named as the No.1 Volvo dealership in the UK and now they know they are the best dealership in the UK.  Well done to Bob and everyone at Grantham Volvo.
Next up, much to his surprise, was Daksh Gupta, on behalf of the Group, who was invited up to collect the DEALER GROUP OF THE YEAR award for the 2nd year running.  This is an extraordinary achievement for the Group as we are not aware of any other Group which has won it in consecutive years.  This award is for “the dealer group which has implemented the most successful strategy for developing sales and profitability in the past year.  The judges were looking for a group which has set standards that competitors would be proud to emulate, and also for a group setting best industry practices.”
Then came the icing on the cake and a fabulous surprise for Daksh personally when he was called up again, this time to be presented with the OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD.  This award is presented to “the person who in the view of the judging panel has most notably raised the profile and enhanced the reputation of the UK motor trade.  The judges were looking for the individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the UK car retailing sector and aim to reward high levels of professionalism, innovation and community spirit.”

The awards were all presented by Jake Humphrey, the BBC Formula One commentator (born in Peterborough!) at a black tie dinner in the magnificent Grosvenor House Hotel in central London.
Speaking after the awards ceremony, Daksh said: “I was so thrilled that Grantham Volvo won the Franchised Dealership of the Year award.  Bob and the whole team there really deserved to win and I’m delighted that the judges agreed!  When it came to the Dealer Group of the Year Award, I have to admit I did not think they would give it to the same group 2 years’ running, even if we were a serious contender, so when they called out our name I could hardly believe it – what a testament to every colleague in Marshall who contributed to making this possible – I am so proud.  After I had collected that award and had my photograph taken with the sponsor, I had only just sat down, reflecting on a remarkable night when suddenly everyone around me was telling me to get back up on the stage.  At first I didn’t believe them but then I realised that it was true!”

Needless to say, Daksh didn’t see why he had been chosen for this award final award, the highlight of the whole awards ceremony, even if the rest of know, and his first comment to me was “but I’m only 40 – I thought you had to be much older to get an award like that!”
Well done Daksh on a much deserved award which reflects well on the rest of the business!!
The Group was also shortlisted in the MOST IMPROVED DEALERSHIP category for Peterborough Vauxhall and also in the ONLINE INNOVATION category for Phoenix.

New generation to step up at Marshall

Sir Michael Marshall, Group Chairman and Chief Executive of the Marshall Group of Companies, one of the UK’s leading family-owned companies, has announced that in 2012 he will be dividing the responsibilities of this dual role, reflecting the substantial growth of the Group in recent years, where annual sales have now reached £1bn.
From January next year, his son Robert Marshall will be taking on the role and duties of Group Chief Executive, working alongside Sir Michael who will remain as Executive Chairman. Robert Marshall joined the family business in 1994.  Sir Michael Marshall has held the combined role of Chairman and Chief Executive since 1990 and is proud to have led the Company’s growth during that period and to have seen it celebrate its centenary in 2009.

Making the announcement about Robert’s forthcoming appointment Sir Michael Marshall said: “I am delighted that Robert will be taking on this responsibility for the Group and that he will be working with me, continuing our family’s close involvement with the day-to-day running of our businesses, through the Chief Executives, over 4 generations.  We are enormously proud of what we have achieved over the last 102 years and look forward confidently towards the future.”
The Marshall Group, which started out as a small chauffeur drive business in Cambridge, has grown to become a well respected name in the motor retail, aerospace and vehicle engineering industry sectors, with 4,500 staff employed across the UK and in offices around the world. Sir Michael Marshall CBE DL took the helm of his family’s diverse group of businesses in January 1990, following the retirement of his father Sir Arthur Marshall OBE DL, who had in turn succeeded his father, David Marshall MBE in 1942.  Robert Marshall was educated at Eton and at Cambridge University, where he gained a First Class Degree in Engineering from Pembroke College.

Marshall Completes Aquisition

Marshall, the fast-growing family-owned dealer group, has today announced the completion of its acquisition of four franchised dealership businesses and an Authorised Repairer from the privately-owned Pilling Motor Group.
The new businesses joining Marshall include two Volvo dealerships in Milton Keynes and Welwyn Garden City, plus Renault in Milton Keynes, Mazda in Milton Keynes, and the Authorised Repairer business for Citroen, also in Milton Keynes.

Commenting on the completion of the acquisition, Daksh Gupta, Chief Executive of Marshall said: “I am really delighted we have completed the acquisition of these businesses from Pilling and I am delighted to be welcoming all of our new colleagues to Marshall. This is another great acquisition for Marshall which fits well with our strategy to grow our business nationally. We now have a large diamond-shaped contiguous territory for Volvo, covering six counties.”
The two new Volvo businesses bring the total representation by Marshall for Volvo to six, with existing dealerships in Cambridge, Peterborough, Grantham and Nottingham to which the new dealerships in Milton Keynes and Welwyn Garden City will be added. Marshall also has an additional authorised repairer business for Volvo in Melton Mowbray.

The addition of these new dealerships makes Marshall the largest partner for Volvo in the UK.
This acquisition also marks new relationships for Marshall with Renault and with Mazda, neither of which the Company has previously represented.

Top website advocates social media in the Motor Industry

Marshall Motor Group, winner of the Motor Trader Website of the Year in 2010, has highlighted the need for dealers to experiment with their online offerings.

Speaking at the recent Motor Trader Social Media Conference, Christopher Walkinshaw, Marshall’s business development director said: “Just like in business, not everything will work first time. Be prepared to try things and alter course if and when required,” he said.

As a business that now represents 26 car brands Walkinshaw acknowledged the challenges of adhering to different carmaker corporate identities but said the problems were not insurmountable with landing pages for each manufacturer and dealership.
Walkinshaw said the group had embraced social media with its CEO Daksh Gupta being a prolific Tweeter and rolling out FaceBook to all 62 dealerships. It also has a Blog on its home page and customer testimonial postings and recently launched on Flickr.

Walkinshaw said its use of social media had successfully increased awareness of the business and its offerings and a useful byproduct had been the attraction of better informed candidates to its business.

“We use social media to receive and transmit. It’s all about both. At first there was a greater tendency to transmit but we recognised the importance of having a balance,” he said.

Record year-ends for Marshall Motor Group

Marshall Motor Group saw record turnover and net profits for its 2010 year-end after the acquisitive family-owned group realised its ambition to further increase its business outside of its Cambridgeshire base.

Turnover for the year-ending 31 December was £600m, a 28.3 per cent increase on 2009 (£467m), while net profit increased 69 per cent to £9.43m from £5.59m.
Return on sales for the expanded group was 1.74 per cent and the return on capital employed of £16.8 per cent.

The group, rated number 10 in the Motor Trader Top 200, significantly grew its representation over the course of the year by adding 15 new sites, including the purchase of Pendragon’s five-strong north west Mercedes-Benz market area last October.

“We’ve had a fantastic year with like-for-like growth across the business and strong overall growth with acquisitions which have obviously strengthened the group. I’m pleased with our profitability and return on sales, which is ahead of our peers,” said Daksh Gupta, chief executive officer.

Talking to Motor Trader Gupta predicted the full year run rate, including all the acquisitions, will generate turnover in the region of £750m. Highlights in the results include a 14.2 per cent increate in new car sales from 10,166 to 11,602; a 16.3 per cent increase in used sales from 14,289 to 16,619; a 21 per cent increase in service net profit from £9.98m to £12.09m.

The group also said it had improved after-sales absorption from 65.8 per cent in 2009 to 77.35 per cent in 2010.

Gupta said all acquisitions since January 2009 had been cash generative from day one and had made profits in their first full years. He also conformed the group will continue its policy of growing its national representation through further acquisitions this year.

“We have a national focus and there are good opportunities out there. We are not going out there knocking on doors and never have done; people are coming to us because they’ve seen our success over the last two years. Q1 was quiet in terms of acquisition opportunities but it’s getting busier now,” he said.

Marshall narrowly beats Vertu in weekend-long Honda sales fight


daksh-gupta-jaguar-marshallMARSHALL Motor Group narrowly beat Vertu in a sales competition organised by the firms’ chief executives on Twitter.
Dealer bosses Daksh Gupta of Marshall and Robert Forrester of Vertu challenged each other to a sales duel this weekend on the social networking site – and the fight raged all weekend.
Marshall’s Honda site in York went head to head with Vertu’s Honda showroom in Grantham with both sales teams egged on by their chief executives on Twitter.
It was a tough battle but at the end of play on Sunday Marshall emerged victorious with eight sales to Vertu’s 7.5 (a bike).
Gupta said on Twitter: ‘It was eight to Marshall 7.5 to Vertu but no losers this weekend, been excellent fun.
‘Congratulations to both Grantham and York for being good sports and it proves that we are in the best industry. Where else could you have this much fun?’
Next week the fight turns into a three way with Seat franchises. Darren Williams, boss of Hodgson Limited, will pitch his site against Gupta’s and Forrester’s.
We’ll certainly be following the action next weekend!

Marshall Buys Honda Business in Harrogate

We have today completed our acquisition of the Honda business in Harrogate from Pendragon Plc for an undisclosed sum.

Marshall Motor Group has represented Honda for 19 years and this new addition brings the Group’s total number of Honda businesses to eight. With seven car businesses in Peterborough, Leicester South, Leicester North, Hull, Scarborough and York, plus one motorcycle dealership in Peterborough, Marshall is now Honda’s largest partner in the UK.
Making the announcement, Daksh Gupta said: “We are delighted to have acquired this business from Pendragon and to be extending to our Honda partnership. This Harrogate business is in a great territory which fits well with our existing, neighbouring Honda businesses in York, Scarborough and Hull, making one large contiguous territory. It also furthers our stated strategy to build strong relationships with our manufacturer brand partners and to grow nationally with scalable business, as we have already done in Yorkshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Cumbria and Lancashire in the last two years.”

Steve Crampton, who originally joined Marshall in 1995, will be transferring to Harrogate to take over responsibility for the new business as General Manager. Steve has been running our Honda cars business in Peterborough for some months following his move across the road from our Toyota business which he had run for many years. Until a new general manager is appointed for Peterborough Honda, Andrew Taylor will assume interim responsibility for this branch as well as his existing Honda dealerships in Leicestershire Commenting on the changes, Mark Furniss said: “Steve has done a great job for us in Peterborough Honda since he moved across there and his knowledge of Marshall and the Honda brand will be hugely helpful as we welcome this new business to Marshall. He is also keen to relocate to Yorkshire, so this will work well for him and for the business. I am also very grateful to Andy Taylor for agreeing to take on additional responsibility while we identify the right person to join our team in Peterborough”

Closing, Daksh added: “I have had the pleasure of meeting already some of our new colleagues at this site who have all transferred to Marshall and I look forward to welcoming all of them to the Marshall family.”

Marshall to Acquire Pilling Businesses

The family-owned Marshall Motor Group has announced that it has agreed (subject to contract) to acquire four franchised dealership businesses and an Authorised Repairer from the privately-owned Pilling Motor Group.

The businesses cover Volvo in Milton Keynes and Welwyn Garden City, plus Renault and Mazda in Milton Keynes.  Also included is an Authorised Repairer business for Citroen in Milton Keynes.

No further statements will be issued until the acquisition is completed which is anticipated to be during April.

Marshall announces new Franchise Director

Marshall, the family owned dealer group, has announced the appointment of Nigel Ward to the position of Franchise Director to run the Group’s recently acquired Mercedes-Benz and smart businesses in the North West.

Nigel joins the Retail Executive Board of Marshall from Inchcape where he was Sales & Marketing Director of that company’s three Mercedes market areas. Nigel has a wealth of experience in the retail motor industry including seven years of in-depth knowledge of the Mercedes-Benz and smart brands.

Making the announcement, Daksh Gupta, Chief Executive of Marshall said: “I am delighted to be welcoming Nigel to our senior team at Marshall and to our new Mercedes division. His wealth of Mercedes-Benz and multi-site experience will be invaluable to us.”

Marshall acquired the seven Mercedes-Benz and smart businesses in the North West MA5 market area at the end of 2010, based in Bolton, Blackburn, Blackpool, Preston and South Lakes.

Commenting on his appointment, Nigel Ward said: “Marshall is a fast moving and forward looking retail group which is investing heavily in the retail motor industry. I am excited to be joining the company at such an exciting time in its own 101 year history and look forward to getting to
know my new colleagues in the MA5 businesses and across the rest of the Group.”

Power of Dreams Award for leading Marshall Honda General Manager

At a glittering dinner in Glasgow, and in front of representatives of the Honda network, James Rodgers was given the “Power of Dreams Award” by the manufacturer for “Excellence in Living the Honda Values”. Speaking at the event, Daksh Gupta, Chief Executive of Marshall, said: “I cannot think of anyone who deserves this award more than James and I am delighted that he has been recognised in front his peers with this award. Marshall Volvo Grantham named as Top Dealer in the UK

The family-owned Marshall Motor Group is celebrating the news that its Volvo dealership in Grantham has been named as the Top Volvo Dealership in the UK, beating 121 other dealers to the No.1 spot.

Daksh Gupta, Chief Executive of Marshall said: “This is tremendous news for Marshall but especially for our great team at Grantham. I could not be happier or more proud of them.”

The national ranking is based on a balanced-scorecard of measures, including customer satisfaction, sales, aftersales and profitability. The scores are published each month until October each year and then the dealers are kept waiting for the final result which was published this week.

Local car retailer Marshall Honda York is one of the best in the country – and that’s official!
The dealership finished inside the top 20 when all 186 of Honda (UK)’s sites across the country were ranked using various performance indicators. Staff at the site – in Great North Way, York – were thrilled to learn the news. Marshall Motor Group rolls out advanced “Red Carpet” training for all Aftersales Employees

  • Over 200 aftersales colleagues to complete tailored training scheme
  • Increases in colleague and customer satisfaction will boost sales and strengthen dealer group’s reputation

Marshall Motor Group has enrolled over 200 aftersales colleagues in a specially designed training programme. The initiative is a central part of Marshall’s ongoing commitment to delivering the industry’s highest standards of customer service and employee satisfaction, while simultaneously targeting an increase in aftersales profitability during 2011.

One of the largest and fastest growing dealer groups in the UK (it has nearly doubled its turnover during the past two years), Marshall Motor Group’s new training scheme aims to develop practical skills for frontline aftersales staff, focusing on both sales and customer service. The modular course – which will be delivered by Castrol Professional’s specialist aftersales training consultants on-site at individual dealerships – has been designed to enable the group’s aftersales professionals to become a driving force for improved profitability and customer satisfaction.

Marshall Hyundai brings World Cup to Colville Primary School

Local car dealer, Marshall Hyundai, this week presented Colville Primary  School in Cambridge with 100 World Cup footballs.

Jeff Manni, General Manager of Marshall Hyundai in Cambridge said: “Hyundai was one of the major sponsors of the 2010 World Cup and is a partner of FIFA. Through our close links with the vehicle manufacturer we were able to get our hands on these spare footballs.”

“We are delighted to have been able to present them to Colville Primary School which is based really close to our business on the east side of Cambridge. They are really high quality footballs so I hope they will last a long time and provide much entertainment to the kids in the process.”
The fast growing family-owned Marshall Group has represented Hyundai in Cambridge since the summer of 2009 and the balls were delivered to the school in the back of the new Hyundai IX-35.
